Tithing

A tithe is a tenth part of something, paid as a contribution to a religious organization or cause. The word comes from the Old English word teogoþa, meaning a tenth. Tithing is an ancient practice that has been practiced by many different cultures and religions for thousands of years.

In the Hebrew Bible, tithing was mandated by God as a way for the people of Israel to support the Levites, who were responsible for religious and spiritual leadership but were not given landholdings like the other tribes. In the New Testament, Jesus spoke about tithing in the context of giving to the poor and needy.

Today, tithing is still practiced by many people around the world as a way to support their religious organizations and causes. For some, it is simply a matter of obedience to what they believe God has called them to do. Others see it as a way to show their gratitude for all that God has given them. And still others find that tithing helps them to be more mindful of their spending and more generous overall. Whatever you decide to give, do it with a cheerful heart.

2 Corinthians 9:6-9 “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”
